October 2009

This is my first newsletter as the Chair of SURG. Firstly a quick introduction to those of you who don't know me, I am Chris Bradley and many of you will have met me on walks or, just as likely, in the pub nights in Farnborough, Guildford, Leatherhead and Richmond. For the past two years I have been the Recruitment Officer for the group. I've now taken over the role of Chair from Leanne and hope to keep up the quality of her newsletters.

As Chair I would like to thank the previous Committee for their service in the last year and also to welcome the new Committee. The Committe's details are now on the website here. I hope that we will ensure the variety of walks and social events are provided for you, the members.

SURG Annual General Meeting

The AGM was held in the Garland pub, Redhill on Saturday 17th October. Summaries of the groups activities and finances over the past year were given, the new committee was voted in and two new items were accepted:

  1. Guiding Principals for members and
  2. an Age policy.

The Guiding Principals are a set of guidelines for what members can expect from the group and reminders of behavioural expectations.

The Age policy has been introduced to confirm the groups age policy. As we are aimed at people in their 20s and 30s we have needed to define what the members can expect when they reach their 40s. For those of you about to reach or are already in your 40s the policy is that you can stay a member until the calendar year of your 42nd birthday. After that we will ask you join another Ramblers group which includes SAWW. You will still remain on the mailing list until the year of your 45th birthday.

Both documents will be made available on the website in the near future.

Membership Secretary

Firstly though we are still looking for someone to take over the role of Membership Secretary. This role is a very important one to the running of the group. The role involves welcoming new members to the group and maintaining members' contact details. If you think you may be interested, please contact either myself on this email address or Carolyn membership on surg.membership@surreyyoungwalkers.org.uk.

Walks and Social events deadline approaching

Just a little reminder to everyone thinking of putting on a walk or social in the Winter programme. The deadline is Sunday 8th November. Please send the details to the Walks Secretaries (surgwalksec@googlemail.com) or Social Events Secretary (surgsocialsec@googlemail.com).

SURG Christmas Part Weeekend 11th - 13th December

Another reminder for those of you wishing to go on this year's SURG Christmas Party in Margate to book your place as these are going quickly. There are a few remaining. We've hired the Margate Youth Hostel and on Saturday will be having a walk, the evening meal and afterwards having a light-hearted look back at the last year with the SURG Annual awards and music to the small hours. It's a warm-up to Christmas. Contact Paul Russell to reserve your place.

SURG Website

Some of you may have noticed that the website has been updated with a login on the front page. This is part of an on-going action to improve the site and make it more accessible to members.

Surrey Area Publicity Volunteers

SURG is part of the wider Surrey Area group of the Ramblers. Surrey Area are looking for volunteers for publicising the Area. If you are interested, please email me.

Well, that's all for this month. Please email me if you have any queries or want further information about any of the items on the newsletter.
