Summer programme out now
The SURG Summer programme is now out, and we hope there's plenty in there for you to enjoy. As well as our regular weekend walks you'll see that there are quite a few midweek evening walks, which are a fantastic way to spend the long summer evenings.
Of course there wouldn't be a programme if it wasn't for all our members who've volunteered their time to lead walks and organise social events. And once all the walks and socials have been submitted, there's more work that goes on behind the scenes. Our Walks Secretaries, Glyn and Sabine Jarvis, and Paul Russell, our Social Secretary, bring all the walks and socials together to create a balanced programme with events every weekend. Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy the new programme.
SURG Contributors' Evening
On Saturday 6th June we'll be holding a special 'invitation only' evening for all those who've contributed to the running of SURG over the last 18 months. This year we've had many members come forward to lead a walk or organise a social for the first time, which is great news. Next year we hope to see even more! The more members who contribute, the more variety we have on the programme.
Old Coulsdon Fair
Last year we were invited to share a publicity stand at this popular fair with the Croydon Ramblers group. This year we'll be back to spend the afternoon handing out leaflets about the Ramblers and telling visitors all about SURG. Thank you to all those who've already volunteered to help, but we do need a few more helpers. The more friendly faces we have on the stand, the more likely people are to stop by, so if you can spare an hour or so between 12pm and 4 pm on Saturday 4th July, please contact Andrea Coates, our Footpath Officer.
Surrey Area Anniversary Walk
Surrey Area Ramblers, which SURG and all the other Surrey Ramblers groups belong to, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. On Sunday 5th July, SURG and other Surrey groups will be leading walks to end at Denbies Vineyard for a celebratory tea. Full details are on the programme and Andrea Coates, our Footpath Officer will be leading the SURG walk starting at Leatherhead station. We look forward to seeing you there!
Read all about it in South East Walker!
If you're a Ramblers member you should have recently received the Summer edition of WALK magazine, along with the South East Walker newspaper which reports on the activities of Ramblers groups across the south east region. On page 13 you'll see an article on last year's SURG walk leader training, contributed by our Walks Secretaries, Glyn and Sabine Jarvis. Any SURG member can write an article, so if you're feeling inspired for the Autumn edition, please send your article (and a couple of photos) to Leanne, the SURG Chair, by the end of June.
Best of the Bakes: Lemon Drizzle Cake
Thanks to Anna Grigson, our Website Officer, for this recipe. Anyone who was on our tenth anniversary walk last May will be able to testify that it is delicious!
175g self-raising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
100g mixed peel
175g butter
3 medium eggs
175g caster sugar
4 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
Zest of 1 large lemon
- Preheat the oven to 180C
- Line the base of a 17.5-20cm/ 7-8 inch cake tin with baking parchment, and grease well.
- In a large bowl, sieve together the flour and baking powder.
- Add the mixed peel, and ensure it is coated with the flour.
- Add the butter, eggs, caster sugar and 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice, and mix thoroughly.
- Pour into the tin, and bake for 40-50 minutes until firm to the touch.
- Leave to cool slightly, then use a fork to prick holes in the top of the cake.
- Dissolve the granulated sugar in the remaining lemon juice, add the lemon zest and pour the sugary mix over the top of the cake.
