Treasurer

Paul (aka ‘Elvis’) joined SURG in May 2002, and met his wife Leanne through the group. He enjoys challenging long-distance walks and has 'summited' many of the highest mountains in the British Isles - but still has lots more to tick off! As well as leading his popular 'Ale Trails', walks and weekends away, Paul served on the committee as Social Secretary from 2004-2006 before taking up the post of Treasurer in October 2007.

As Treasurer, Paul makes sure that the Group keeps a healthy bank balance, and doesn’t spend money it doesn’t have! His role is to:

• Account for the funds we receive from Surrey Area, or from social events.
• Monitor and manage the finances of the Group, reporting regularly to the Group committee on the financial position of the Group.
• Pay the bills, and re-imburse volunteers for out-of-pocket expenses.
• Prepare a simple end-of-year financial statement for the Group, get it audited and submit it to Central Office.

Thinking about standing for Treasurer?

You’d make a good Treasurer if you’re:

• Methodical and organised.
• Numerate and not intimidated by figures.
• Comfortable with using spreadsheets.

It’s not essential to have any financial background to be a treasurer, but previous experience of managing budgets or accounts is useful. Extensive “Guidelines for Treasurers” are sent to all Treasurers, and there’s an induction for all new or prospective Treasurers. Support is available from the Finance Team at the RA's Central Office.
